The congregation of East Sylva Baptist was founded as a church dedicated to the service of evangelization of the world for Christ. The church is involved in many ministries and mission opportunities each year to demonstrate this commitment…

Small Group Bible Study

Each Sunday morning at 9:45 the church offers a variety of Sunday School or small group Bible studies. Classes are held for all ages including men, women, couples, young adults, youth, children, and a nursery. The church encourages everyone to become involved with one of these groups to help you grow in your spiritual journey and connect with other believers.

Music Ministry

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Colossians 3:16

Music has been a key element of worship throughout the history of the church. Choirs, ensembles, quartets, trios, and soloists have provided inspiration to not only the church membership but to many throughout the community and surrounding area. The adult choir made actual recordings in the 1960’s and the 1970’s, and has traveled to many other churches to provide special music. The choir, which sings at each Sunday worship service, currently has 40 members and is one of the largest choirs in the county. The choir rehearses each Wednesday night following prayer service. The youth/children’s choir had 25 members participate in the 2013 Christmas play and musical.

Special singing services are held on occasion in the church sanctuary. East Sylva invites other church choirs for joint services in addition to hosting groups such as the Inspirations and Imperials.

The Scriptures compel us…to “sing praises to God” and to share together the “psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs” of the church. Through music, we unite our spirits and our minds in acts of worship, celebration, thanksgiving, confession, witness, and proclamation. Whether as a member of the choir or as a part of the congregation, we are all called to “make a joyful sound to the Lord.” We encourage all to come as we join our hearts and voices in worship each Sunday and embody the unity of spirit and purpose to which Christ has called us. There are no auditions or forms. To join our choir all you have to do is sing!

Youth and Children

East Sylva Baptist Church offers great programs for our children & youth!

During the summer months, we provide Bible Study and activities on Wednesday evenings while the kids are out of school.  We do great summer day camps for all ages including “Mom’s Days Out” for the youngest children, “Girl’s Day Out” for the middle age/youth girls and “Boy’s Days Out” for our middle age boys.

We also have activities for our Youth during the summer months including Mission Trips, lock-ins, bowling as well as other fun activities.  We hold a week long Vacation Bible School (VBS): Bible lessons, music time, recreation, crafts and let’s not forget snack time!  At the end of the summer, we have a “Back to School Bash” at the Sylva Pool where the kids have pizza and enjoy the pool with their friends and family.

During the winter months, we have Sunday evening Youth Bible Studies and on the 1st and 3rd Sunday evenings, the Children enjoy Bible Study and Music Time.  The Youth have lock-ins during the winter months as well.  An annual church-wide event each fall is “Trunk or Treat”.  The church along with our children and youth, enjoy this special event where we have the opportunity to share our church’s love with the kids in our community.   Our annual Christmas Play/Musical is another event enjoyed by everyone.  Throughout the year we have parties to celebrate holidays but the biggest is on Easter with our annual Easter Egg Hunt and scavenger hunt.  The children really enjoy these special parties and we thank all our youth for helping with these special events.

We have Sunday School classes for all our children and youth.  Sunday School begins at 9:45 a.m. each Sunday morning.  Some of the classes for the younger children are “Racing for God” where they earn special prizes after completing a number of Sunday School attendances.  They are really enjoying this fun Sunday School event.

With a balance of Bible Study and other activities, we hope to teach our children and youth that coming to East Sylva and being a Christian is FUN! During each Sunday morning worship service, we have a great Children’s Sermon – come join us!

Happy Friends

Happy Friends meet monthly for fellowship meals, shopping trips, and parties. This past year, the Happy Friends went on trips to Pigeon Forge, TN, Asheville, NC, and Dillard, GA. This group is open to men and women who are 50 years old or older. Members of “Happy Friends” do not have to be a church member to join.

Deacon Family Ministry

The deacons of ESBC serve in accordance with the meaning of the work and practice of the New Testament.  The deacons serve with the pastor and staff in performing ministries such as: visiting and caring for the church members and other persons in the community; leading the church in achievement of its missions through a personal example of Christian living, education, and training; and offering encouragement toward unity within the fellowship of the church.  Our deacons are people called to an ever-deepening quest for God and service to neighbor.

Community Garden

In an on-going effort to reach out to our neighbors in need, the members of East Sylva Baptist Church began producing a community garden in 2009.  They lovingly prepare the soil, plant the seeds, and tend to the plants so that God will be glorified with a bountiful harvest of fresh vegetables!  The produce from the garden is then donated to the Community Table, United Christian Ministries and the Council on Aging, as well as other individuals within the community of Jackson County.

2013 Community Garden Update:
We were again so happy about our harvest from our Community Garden here at East Sylva.  We again took produce to United Christian Ministries & the Council on Aging and we were also able to send produce for use our 2013 Mission Trip to Corbin, KY.   This year our totals were:  144 ears of corn, 48 lbs. of okra, 164 lbs. of tomatoes, 145 lbs. of squash, 62 lbs. of cucumbers and 23 lbs. of bell peppers!   We would again like to thank all the wonderful church members who came during all stages of the gardening process and helped.   We had people who helped with preparing the garden area/soil before planting, the planting of the garden, weeding, collecting the produce and finally getting everything cleared out.

WMU

The ladies of WMU lead the congregation in many different ministry projects each year such as Operation Christmas Child through Samaritan’s Purse, Heifer International, Jackson County Christmas Store, Jackson County Department on Aging, United Christian Ministry, Jackson County Pregnancy Counseling Center, School Teacher Supplies Collection, North Carolina Baptist Children’s Home, North Carolina Baptist Hospital, Baptist Retirement Homes, and CBF Offering for Global Missions.

G.R.O.W. Outreach

G.R.O.W. Outreach (GROWING and REACHING OTHERS by WITNESSING) is one of the ways in which ESBC tries to reach out to church and community members. On the 1st Sunday night of each month at 6 pm we gather at the church, working together to attempt to reach our community for Christ.

There are a number of ways to become a part of G.R.O.W. Outreach: phone calls, visits, writing letters and cards and preparing care packages for college students and senior citizens.

If you would like to join our team and help us in furthering Jesus’ mission, please come by the church or contact us at 828-586-2853 for more details.

Recreation

The church offers opportunities for members to fellowship through various activities and sporting events. The church participates in basketball, volleyball, and softball leagues through the Jackson County Recreation and Parks Department.

Each Saturday before Homecoming Sunday in August the church holds its annual golf tournament which has become an event that is enjoyed by the young inexperienced golfers as well as the church golf pros.

Recently the church members completed construction on a church pavilion which is located behind the church fellowship hall. The facility was dedicated in October 2013 and hosted the church’s first corn hole tournament, which promises to become an annual event.

Radio Ministry

East Sylva has broadcast their services on Sylva’s local radio station WRGC since the 1970’s. The church began this ministry by broadcasting live each Sunday night service. The church currently records the Sunday morning worship service and WRGC plays it on the airwaves at 6:00 p.m. each Sunday evening.

The church has had many different mission teams help with local community projects as well as travel to many different locations across the country. Recent trips have been made to Mississippi to provide hurricane relief in conjunction with the North Carolina Baptist Men, to Wyoming to help with house repairs with World Changers, and most recently to Williamsburg/Corbin Kentucky to do home repairs and minister to residents in assisted living facilities and in homeless shelters.

Whether young or mature, East Sylva encourages the opportunity to grow in faith and love and to find a place within our ministries to use the gifts that God has given every individual.
